Meniscus Repair & Meniscectomy

Meniscus Repair and Meniscectomy are surgical procedures performed to treat tears of the meniscus, a C-shaped cartilage in the knee that acts as a shock absorber and provides joint stability. Meniscus injuries commonly occur due to sports activities, twisting movements, or age-related degeneration. The choice between repair and removal (meniscectomy) depends on the type, location, and severity of the tear. The main goal of treatment is to relieve pain, restore knee function, and prevent long-term joint damage.

Meniscus Repair

Meniscus repair involves stitching the torn cartilage back together to allow natural healing. This procedure is preferred when the tear is located in the vascular (blood-rich) zone of the meniscus, where healing potential is better. Preserving the meniscus helps maintain knee stability and reduces the risk of future arthritis.

Meniscectomy

Meniscectomy involves trimming or removing the damaged portion of the meniscus when the tear cannot be repaired. It is commonly performed arthroscopically and provides quicker recovery compared to repair. However, only the damaged fragment is removed to preserve as much healthy cartilage as possible.

Key Benefits of Arthroscopic Treatment
  • Minimally invasive procedure with small incisions
  • Reduced post-operative pain and swelling
  • Faster recovery and early mobilization
  • Improved knee stability and function
  • Lower risk of long-term joint complications
